After India's independence in 1947, the local people started encircling the forests where Dudhwa National Park is located today and paddy and sugarcane were cultivated at that place. This place on the India-Nepal border was a good place for hunters who used to hunt the animals here and sell their products in Nepal. Earlier this place was a paradise for hunters, sports lovers and local people. This park has become a prosperous place today because of the efforts of Billy Arjan Singh. This area was declared a wildlife sanctuary in the year 1965, after which it faced a lot of criticism from the people who took advantage of this place. But Arjan Singh took permission from the then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, after which the forest was declared a national park in 1977. Later this park was declared a tiger reserve and now this park is a major habitat for tigers in India. The oldest protected area among the three major areas of Dudhwa Tiger Reserve is Kashipur Wildlife Sanctuary which was made a wildlife sanctuary in 1972. After this, Katarnighat Wildlife Sanctuary was declared as wildlife sanctuary in 1975 and then Dudhwa National Park in 1977.
