Dudhwa National Park Marks Triumphant Release of One-Horned Rhino into Open Forest
Dudhwa celebrates a historic move after four decades of relentless efforts on conservation. Dudhwa National Park recently released its first one-horned rhinoceros into the open forest, with plans for three more to follow soon. This milestone is part of an ongoing reintroduction program aimed at increasing the rhino population in the wild. Once thriving in Uttar Pradesh's Terai region, rhinos disappeared due to habitat loss and poaching long before India’s independence. In 1984, a successful effort brought rhinos from Assam to Dudhwa, leading to steady population growth. The rhino named Raghu, a male estimated to be between 12 and 15 years old, was previously kept in a rhino rehabilitation area (RRA-1) spanning 27 sq km. His release marks an important step in improving genetic diversity and strengthening the species’ presence, as highlighted by Field Director Lalit Verma.
This project is considered a success story for wildlife conservation. Experts from Kaziranga in Assam, WWF-India, and the Wildlife Trust of India carefully assessed the rhinos’ health and behavior to ensure they were ready to thrive in the wild.
Fly With the All-New Chopper Service from Lucknow to Dudhwa - A Fresh Face to Dudhwa Tourism
To promote tourism in Uttar Pradesh, the state government has introduced a helicopter service between Lucknow and Dudhwa, that commenced on November 25. This new service aims to make travel more convenient for tourists, reducing the current 4.5-hour road journey to just one hour by air. Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh announced that the initiative follows the chief minister’s directive to improve access to eco-tourism destinations such as Dudhwa National Park, Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary, and Pilibhit Tiger Reserve.
The service will operate from Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport in Lucknow to the government airstrip in Palia. A 15-seater chartered plane has been deployed for this purpose, with a one-way ticket priced at ₹5,000 per person. Initially, the choppers will run four days a week, including mandatory operations on Saturdays and Sundays. This effort is part of the government's plan to enhance connectivity to key eco-tourism sites in the region.
